Law of return: case brings former premier Anand back to politics
Article Abstract:
Former Thai Prime Minister Anand Panyarachun faces prosecution in a criminal case that many foreign observers are looking upon as a test of Thailand's new political order. Anand, who served as premier twice in 1991-92, will be tried for malfeasance in preventing the promotion of former Supreme Court judge Pravit Khamparat to chief justice of a regional court of appeals in 1992. Anand's conviction would tell foreign businessmen and diplomats that Thailand's vested interests have not lost their dominance.

Firing practice
Article Abstract:
Thailand's political system is full of surprises. Prime Minister Anand Panyarachun, who attained his post without benefit of election, did the unexpected when he dissolved parliament and scheduled a general election on Sep 13, 1992. This apparent move toward democracy is however mined with difficulties. The military has had a taste power for so long that it would need a particularly skillful and strong politician to compel its leadership to stay off politics.
