Where are Indonesia's democrats?
Article Abstract:
The massacre of people taking place in East Timor and the conspicuous absence of a violent reaction among Indonesia's people is disturbing. Disturbing because the events taking place in East Timor are an eerie resemblance of the bloodbath that followed Suharto's ascendance to power in 1965. While the international community continues to call on Indonesians to subject the local militias under control, it is up to the citizens of Indonesia to act and unite for justice to serve as a worthy foundation of their country's move towards democracy.
