The struggle for European unions
Article Abstract:
The four month strike by UK members of the Federation of European Metalworkers at British Aerospace (BAe) illustrated a new cross-border cooperation among European labor unions, which might herald the formation of pan-European labor agreements. The UK union members were supported by the German engineering union, IG Metall, which included financial aid. The cooperation by European labor unions comes at a time when membership in labor unions has drastically declined in some European Community (EC) countries, particularly France, the Netherlands, and the UK, although membership has remained steady in Sweden, Denmark, and western Germany. Unions are moving away from confrontational tactics such as strikes towards a policy of more cooperation with management. However, transnational labor negotiations and collective bargaining face the substantial obstacle of differing labor laws among EC member nations.

The long goodbye
Article Abstract:
The profitable alliance between Honda UK and Rover Group is beset by problems that may cause the Japanese and the European carmakers to dissolve the partnership. These problems include differences in management and production practices, communication breakdowns, and disagreements regarding productivity and quality. The partnership has proven to be advantageous for the two companies in the past, providing Honda with an outlet for its products in Europe, and saving Rover from possible collapse. A growing imbalance within the partnership is being felt, with Honda being perceived as the dominant partner, and Rover little more than a name.
