The trouble with flags
Article Abstract:
There has been a debate on the usage of the Confederate flag in South Carolina, where it has been flown since 1962, in response to legislation on civil rights. There has been a march involving almost 50,000 people calling for the flag to be removed, since it is seen as a symbol of slavery. The US expects other countries to move on from divisive issues in their past, but this issue is not being tackled in South Carolina. It could be electorally unwise for politicians to support a narrow base, and exclude minorities.

Ole Fritz keeps charmin' along
Article Abstract:
Ernest Hollings is Democrat senator for South Carolina and he faces Bob Inglis, Republican candidate, as his opponent. The contest is likely to be close, and Hollings gained only 50% of South Carolina's vote in 1992. He has to win Republican votes as well as African American votes in order to win. Hollings is effective and in touch with political trends, and he may gain respect due to his age. Meanwhile, Jim Hidges appears to have a chance to win the governorship for the Democrats.
