The unchosen people
Article Abstract:
A debate is raging between the 'old' and 'new' Israeli historians on the role the formation of Israel played in displacing the Palestinians from their homeland. The 'new' Israeli historians support the premise that Israel consciously planned the eviction of the Palestinians, and that their victory in the 1947-49 war forced the Palestinians out of the their homeland. The 'old' Israeli historians believe that Israel pursued a more 'benign' approach in displacing the Palestinians off their land. Possibly, acceptance by Israelis that their predecessors did push Palestinians from their land will lead to improved relations between present-day neighbors.

O Caledonia!
Article Abstract:
The 'Journal' of Sir Walter Scott has been republished and records a key time in Scott's life as well as Sotland's history. Scott faced debts which he aimed to repay through his writing. He had been hit by the failure of publishers that he had set up a partnership with. Constitutional issues were important in Scotland of the 1820s and Scott argued in favor of cultural diversity. There are parallels with the debate in the 1990s and this makes for interesting reading.
