Yet another Asian value
Article Abstract:
High levels of optimism in Asia have played a significant role in driving the region's economic performance. Research undertaken in 29 countries for The Economist by the Angus Reid Organisation indicates that Asia is the most optimistic region in the world, despite its recent economic difficulties. The only exception to this is Japan, where only 9% of those polled expected to be better off in a year's time. Asian optimism is surprising in the light of the fact that Asians are not at all satisfied with their current circumstances.

On their feet again?
Article Abstract:
The rapidity of the recovery of Asian economies has surprised many observers. Stock prices are rising, though it is unlikely that growth rates will be as high as they were before the crisis. There are a number of risks faced by these economies, such as a possible drop in US stock prices, or an economic crisis in China. There is a need for banking reform in Asia. Monetary policy has been relatively successful, though there is room for improvement.

Will the world slump?
Article Abstract:
Unprecedented volatility in world financial markets may point to a global slump. Two approaches to understanding markets are the Asia question and the idea that world capacity has surpassed demand. Asia requires attention, but the demand-capacity argument is entirely fallacious.
