The unstoppable Dr Mahathir

Mahathir Mohamad hs won elections held in Noiv 1999, and he commands over 66% of the parliamentary seats. His currency controls, and the imprisonment of his deputy, Anwar Ibrahim, were seen as likely to bring problems, but the economy is recovering, and the electorate does not appear outraged at the imprisonment. There has still been an increase in the number of seats held by the opposition, which has 45 seats of a total of 193. The United Malays National Organisation, the ruling party, depends on Malays, who have also supported the opposition.

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, a master politician, is expected to retain the office he has held since 1981, and has also lured a breakaway faction back into his party. Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah announced he would lead his Semangat '46 back into the United Malays National Organization.
