Theater ballistic missile defense: the tide begins to turn
Article Abstract:
The Ballistic Missile Defense Organization has authorized the US Army to proceed with the engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) of the Theater High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system. The US Army has performed 11 flight tests during the program-definition and risk-reduction (PDRR) phase. All the elements of the THAAD system including the missile, radar, launcher, battle-and-management command, control and communications performed well during the PDRR phase. The EMD phase will involve 35-40 test shots starting in 2002-03.
