They love him now he's going
Article Abstract:
UK Liberal Democrats leader Paddy Ashdown has announced that he will step down in summer 1999 and give up his Yeovil, England, seat at the next general election. Ashdown has certainly revived the party's fortunes, but some Liberal Democrats have become concerned about the party's increasingly close links with the Labour party. Some observers have been critical of Ashdown, but there is no clear replacement for him. The battle to become the new party leader will inevitably raise sensitive questions about the party's current strategy.

The knives are out
Article Abstract:
The UK Labour party and the Liberal Democrats have placed strong emphasis at national level on cooperation. However, at local level there is much less harmony between the two parties. At national level, the two parties were motivated to cooperate to remove the Conservatives from power, but at local level the Conservatives have not necessarily been very successful, thus making cooperation between Labour and the Liberal Democrats unnecessary. Local politicians remain unwilling to consider inter-party cooperation at any price.
