Thin activity seen in Tokyo; market is vulnerable to futures fluctuations
Article Abstract:
Asian stock market projections for the third week of July 1997 suggest that stock investors in Tokyo can expect to gain from the Nikkei Stock Average by buying into pharmaceutical and telecommunications shares, but overall it will be susceptible to fluctuations in the futures market. The Hong Kong market is expected to dip as an effect of profit-taking in red-chip stocks while Thailand's stock market is expected to climb because of buying from underweight foreign investors. Jakarta will continue to consolidate its market while Malaysia's continued high interest rates will push investors away from the market.

Difficult quarter is expected for stock market; declining earning results are seen trumping the city's low interest rates
Article Abstract:
Analysts are bearish about the Hong Kong stock market for 1999. They believe that despite the expected cut in interest rates, real interest rates will remain high due to the absence of inflation. The cuts will also have no effect on businesses in the verge of bankruptcy. The Hang Seng Index will reach about 9360 on Mar 31, 1999, down by 7.5% from 10121.44 on Dec 30, 1998. Moreover, the market will be extremely volatile throughout the year.
