A film festival for thrillers is held annually in Cognac, France, and new thrillers from the US are dominating the contributions for 2000. They include 'Reindeer Games' from John Frankenheimer. The festival has a large number of juries, including one comprised of international police commanders. Cognac merchants established the festival and the aims is to help boost sales of cognac, though the style of the movies has changed since the festival began.

Developments in Asian cinema can be assessed at film festivals in Hong Kong, and Udine, Italy, though the Italian festival has more adventurous movies. Chinese movies can rival those of Hollywood, and Hong Kong is recovering from its financial crisis. Movies are also discussed from Japan and S Korea.
