Schools in Japan and other industrialized Asian countries have the world's most dedicated students. The school facilities are generally substandard to US facilities, but the children have a real dedication to learning. Societal and parental pressures are also influential.

NSOM technology uses mathematical Fourier analysis to combine light and touch, producing resolutions nearly as keen as electron microscopes. NSOM is much gentler on the object of observation than electron bombardment, and is being praised by biologists.
