Sechselauten - ringing in the spring
Article Abstract:
The Sechselauten celebrations in Zurich, Switzerland occur every year on the third Monday in April to commemorate the end of dead Winter and the entry of Spring. The event starts with a parade and ends with the burning of a straw snowman called the Boogg. The Boogg represents the evil winter spirits and demons and has pre-Christian origins. It was, therefore, forbidden as a pagan custom after the Reformation. However, the ban did not last long because children insisted on making a Shrovetide procession with a snowman.
