To boldly go...
Article Abstract:
US economic policy has had to be developed under changing circumstances, since inflation and wage pressure appear subdued, although economic growth has been strong. Interest rate rises have had little impact, and there has been an acceleration in demand growth since summer 1999. Both investment and consumption are increasing. Productivity rises have helped foster growth, though it is unclear whether this is a result of structural change, and how long productivity growth will last. There is concern about the trade deficit, stock prices, and posible wage pressure, so there are reasons for seeking an economic slowdown.

Desperately seeking a perfect model
Article Abstract:
The US economic model of flexible product and labor markets has been presented as desirable, yet there are issues that need to be examined further to asses how well the US economy has performed. US economic growth has been strong from 1992 to 1998, but per capita gross domestic product in the 10 years to 1999 has been the same as Japan's, at 1.6%. US productivity growth is slower than that of Japan or Germany, though US job creation is superior. Some models may be better suited to particular cultures. The US model could be criticised for the low savings rate and educational level of the work force.

Economics 101
Article Abstract:
US interest rates have been raised by 0.25% in Aug 1999, and this has had little impact on the stock market. This timid rate rise has left investors in the belief that rates will not rise further, yet the US economy has been growing for 101 months, and there are risks from labor shortages and wage inflation. The US trade deficit is also increasing, as are corporate and consumer debt. The US dollar could drop in value. There are a number of factors that could lead to a hard landing for the US economy.
