Toomas Ilves, Estonia's American-European
Article Abstract:
Estonian foreign minister, Toomas Ilves, has succeeded in his goal of gaining the respect of the European Union (EU), and Estonia is one of five countries scheduled for early EU membership. Estonia is the least corrupt post-Soviet country. Estonia may not be likely to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, but membership has not been discounted. Ilves has argued that Estonia should react calmly to Russian taunts. He points out that ethnic Russians only increased in number due to Russian occupation, so they do not have a right to full citizenship simply as a result of reconquest. He notes that ethnic Russians are more likely to have a well paid job in Estonia than in Russia.
