Tough love
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom government has promised increased spending in education and health, and prudence in terms of government spending. This combination leads to confusion when seeking to assess pay policy. Spending policies on education and health may be more generous than those of previous Conservative administrations, while pay rises may be less generous than previous Labor policies. Labor unions are responding in a discouraging way to pay rises. One way to tackle the problem is to end national pay settlements and provide local budgets.

Empty promises
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom government has announced spending plans to increase the number of police officers, though the numbers are not likely to increase by as much as the government claims. The government also announced plans to tackle heart disease, though some of the spending had already been approved, and the additional sum is likely to make little impact. Other plans relating public services such as to education have been announced a number of times as though they were new.
