Tough mandate
Article Abstract:
Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui's resounding 1996 election victory leaves him in a better position to deal with China, but Beijing's succession struggle clouds the issue of Taiwan's future status. Lee still wants to get Taiwan back in the United Nations, and could enhance his chances with any sort of credible gesture fo lasting peace with mainland China. His win was a sharp blow to Beijing, whose military exercises may have moved more pro-independence voters into Lee's camp, giving him more than a 50% mandate.
