Bildt is trying to stop the economic slide instigated by the Social Democratic Party's efforts to curb inflation. He plans sharp cuts in government spending such as a 13% cut in welfare. Rising unemployment, the declining GDP and the recent history of Sweden's economic troubles are analysed.

Sweden anticipates the ratification of the 1992 Treaty on European Union, and most Swedes favor the treaty. Sweden was able to avert a recent threat to the valuation of the krona and the country has kept inflation down. Spending cuts have also been activated.
