Traveller's tales
Article Abstract:
Young Japanese tourists are providing additional income to the city of Cairns in Australia. From 29,000 tourist arrivals in 1975, Cairns is expecting an influx of up to 820,000 foreign travelers in 1992 due to the increase in flights from the Japanese cities of Tokyo and Nagoya. Other Australian cities have demonstrated varying degrees of envy and resentment towards the tourist boom being experienced by Cairns. Some critics insinuate that Japanese tourists are being steered away from Australian shops and into Japanese stores because of an alleged kickback system where tour operators receive a portion of sales from shop owners.
