True romance
Article Abstract:
The merger between Finnish bank Merita and Swedish bank Nordbanken has proved more successful than many European cross-border banking mergers. MeritaNordbanken President and Chief Executive Vesa Vanio maintains that an important factor in the success has been the rapid installation of a single corporate culture. Other relevant features include the small size of the two institutions, the drive for expansion, and the close economic, cultural and geographical links between the two nations involved. MeritaNordbanken is looking for further mergers and is expanding into Eastern Europe.

Lost Barings: Over the past month, Baring Brothers, once the doyen of relationship banking, has seen nearly all of its key corporate finance staff quit
Article Abstract:
Baring Brothers has lost many of its key finance staff over recent weeks and is finding it hard to find short-term replacements of the same calibre. Baring Brothers International's (BBI) advisory business is managed by corporate finance directors. When ING took Barings over it managed to keep the team intact, but many of the directors of BBI and the corporate finance department seem to have fallen out with ING senior management. Barings may have to tailor its services to mid-market UK corporate advice to be successful.

The wheel turns full circle
Article Abstract:
The methods and financial provision of mergers and acquisition deals has dramatically changed from the cut-throat days of the early 1980s compared with the much more strategic and well thought out deals made in the late 1990s. Many of the small, independent banks and investment houses have been swallowed up by large organisations, which leaves young junior staff without a direct route to the top. Banks have expanded their services to provide a one-stop financial package for clients.
