Tung expects to tell the U.S. about handover success
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa's planned visit to the US in September 1997 to declare Hong Kong's successful conversion to China may receive a hostile greeting as Hong Kong's new electoral laws reduce voter base. Hong Kong's functional constituencies have been limited to roughly 180,000 voters in 1997 from 2.7 million in the last election. On the outside, Hong Kong seems not to have lost its freedom, but what has changed is the extent of the city's democracy. China appointed a new unelected Hong Kong lawmaking body immediately after the handover.

Colony's optimism for '97 is tinged with insecurity
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong businesses expect a boom when the colony finally shifts to Chinese rule in 1997. Mainland Chinese are expected to seek residence in Hong Kong and conduct profitable business deals. However, the optimism is clouded with uncertainty over the true future of Hong Kong. More foresighted businessmen are preparing for another scenario wherein law and order will deteriorate and corruption becomes rampant.

For Hong Kong handover, the devil is in the details
Article Abstract:
The Chinese government has repeatedly assured Hong Kong residents that they will be allowed to continue with their capitalist way of life when China takes over the island in 1997. However, many still harbor concerns as to how two very different societies will be able to mesh together. There are also concerns about a number of perceived gaps in Hong Kong's legal and economic infrastructure.
