Turkey on trial
Article Abstract:
Kurdish leader, Abdullah Ocalan, is on trial in Turkey and may be hanged. Ocalan is the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) head, and the PKK has killed several hundred fellow Kurds, but it would be a mistake to impose the death sentence on Ocalan. Turkey has links with the European Union (EU) and Middle East. The EU should maintain links with Turkey, but there is little understanding of the need for minorities to be able to make requests of the state in a peaceful way. Kurds can be jailed simply for asking for education in their language, and Turkey cannot be seen as a democracy while this occurs.

What a tangle
Article Abstract:
Italy and Germany have suggested to Turkey that it should tackle the problem of relations with its Kurdish minority and seek a political settlement. They have also suggested that an international tribunal should try Kurdish separatist commander, Abdullah Ocalan. Turkey has carried out a number of arrests of Kurdish leaders. The strong performance of the Islamist Virtue Party in an opinion poll could have influenced the government, as could polls indicating that the People's Democratic Party, a pro-Kurdish group, could perform well.
