Turkey's long haul
Article Abstract:
Turkey is seeking to join the European Union (EU) and this is not likely to occur over the short term, though some progress has been made, with Turkey among selected applicants. Turkey has an important strategic value and has links with the Balkan region, central Asia, and can help to calm Russia. There has been some progress in terms of greater political openness and economic development, but there are also obstacles, such as the treatment of Turkey's Kurds. There is a need for changes in the constitution, and other political changes before EU membership can be achieved.
