Turnaround: South Africa's economy

The South African rand fell 22% against the US dollar in 1996, but the fall of the overvalued rand has proven to be a boon for the country's economy and an economic recovery is underway in 1997. In addition, the Nelson Mandela government appears more confident and in control of financial matters.

South Africa must take steps to strengthen the current climate of reconciliation and the institutions that support it. The new constitution that protects freedoms must be accepted by all parties. Taking these steps will secure South Africa's future after Mandela steps down as president.

South African Pres Nelson Mandela extended the political crimes amnesty from incidents occurring in Dec 1993 to May 10, 1994, but the amnesty is being applied selectively. Recent terrorist bombings in Rustenburg by a right wing group and the Muslim grou PAGAD are among topics discussed.
