US Coast Guard negotiates Deepwater
Article Abstract:
The US Coast Guard (USCG) is exploring innovative European frigate and patrol corvette designs for the service's Integrated Deepwater System fleet modernization program between 2001 and 2015. The estimated $8-billion project, said USCG operational requirements planner Capt. Tim Terriberry, will be launched to build a fully-integrated system of complementary cutters, aircraft, sensors, and command and control nodes such as unmanned aerial vehicles. The program also hopes to attract US naval ship builders to assemble a future MEKO for possible boost to the Foreign Military Sales exports, as well as allow the industry to exhibit its technological capability. The Danish Stanflex-based, Naval Team Denmark-designed multirole ship for peace-support operations is already being explored by the Deepwater officials.

Saudi Eagle's talons sharpened
Article Abstract:
The Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) is updating its newly-acquired Boeing F-15S Eagles to a standard nearly equal to that of the US Air Force's (USAF's) F-15E Eagle interdictor fighter. The RSAF will be furnished with 72 tangential weapons retrofit kits by the McDonnel Aircraft & Missiles Group of Boeing as called for by a recently-awarded contract. The retrofit kits will allow each aircraft's three bomb racks to be fitted to each of the two conformal fuel tanks. Meanwhile, the RSAF was offered an upgrade program for 1,500 Raytheon Systems AIM-9L Sidewinder short-range air-to-air missile by the US Department of Defense.

USAF seeks advanced single-aperture interferometry
Article Abstract:
The US Air Force Research Laboratory wants to grant a contract in September 1998 for 48 months of research to come up with an advanced wideband mode-forming network (MFN), which may be included in a single-aperture interferometer that is precise though less costly, less bulky and lightweight. Possible long-term uses include electronic-support measure (ESM) systems aboard aircraft including the B-2 bomber, Joint Strike Fighter and unmanned aerial vehicles. The final aim is to obtain angle-of-arrival accuracies of smaller than 0.2 degree per pulse in X-band at a signal-to-noise ratio of 30 dB.
