U.S. program turns trash into opportunity
Article Abstract:
Opportunity International and other microcredit programs offer small amounts of money to Filipino entrepreneurs who parlay the small loans into viable businesses. The Philippines has given Opportunity International a full banking license, so it can accept deposits, so the scheme is working better than similar plans that have foundered since Muhammad Yunus formed Grameen Bank in Bangladesh 25 years ago. Microfinance programs can help the 15 million Filipinos who live a subsistence existence, out of a population of 77 million, and so may help prevent the development of communist or fundamentalist Islamic rebellions or terrorist organizations in underdeveloped countries.

Philippine organization discovers unique ways to distribute condoms
Article Abstract:
Nonprofit organization DKT International is using some innovative approaches in its efforts to promote condom use in the Philippines. DKT's television commercials are trying to make sex more respectable by featuring married couples, and the organization once resorted to door-to-door condom delivery. The cultural obstacles DKT faces include the Catholic Church's resistance to birth control and extramarital sex and a machismo resulting from the country's Spanish heritage.
