Under Suharto's banyan tree
Article Abstract:
Suharto's re-election by members of parliament as president of Indonesia for the 5th time was not surprising since he controls 60% of the parliamentary seats. Suharto is now 71 and his successor is uncertain. The military may not be willing to accept VP Try Sutrisno as his successor.

After Suharto
Article Abstract:
Economic growth will continue in Indonesia throughout Suharto's presidency, but there is some question as to what will happen after he is gone. Liberals hope for a more democratic system, but it is more likely that Gen Try Sutrisno, vice-president and army leader, will take over.

Now for the hard part
Article Abstract:
One obstacle remains to complete economic development in Indonesia is the spoils system Pres Suharto maintains for his friends and relatives. Certain industries remain protected and some contracts are awarded to the same companies because of this patronage.
