Unfairness at work
Article Abstract:
The UK government's Fairness at Work White Paper could have a very negative impact on small businesses. The White Paper establishes the basis for compulsory trade union recognition in many private sector concerns, a development opposed by the Institute of Directors. There is a danger that compulsory trade union recognition will force small businesses to devote considerable time to negotiations with union representatives, thus increasing business costs. The government should consider raising the threshold below which small businesses will be exempt from provisions relating to compulsory trade union recognition.

Article Abstract:
Recent closures of foreign-owned firms in the UK highlight the dangers of relying strongly on overseas investment for domestic employment. Regional development agencies should maintain their policies to attract inward investment, but another policy, which would not be dependent on the strength of overseas economies, would be the support of domestic start-ups. Statistics show that 3-4% of start-ups eventually create 25-30% of new jobs. Agencies could support the development of these firms with policies including a simplification of administrative paperwork.
