Upgraded T-38's successful first flight
Article Abstract:
The first T-38C Talon advanced trainer aircraft flew for the first time from the Williams Gateway Airport at Mesa, AZ, on July 8, 1998, which is a month earlier than set. The plane includes improvements made under the T-38 Avionics Upgrade program (AUP), a part of the Pacer Classic initiative to prolong the Talon's life until at least 2020. Boeing is main contractor for AUP, with Israel Aircraft Industries playing the part of key subcontractor, under three deals signed in July 1996, which have an aggregate value of $750 million. The program calls for the upgrading of 509 USAF T-38s and NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training aircraft to the T-38C configuration by the end of fiscal 2005.

US Navy enhances aerial targets
Article Abstract:
The US Navy has authorized an engineering change plan to upgrade its BQM-74E aerial targets with a modern integrated avionics unit (IAU) that will enhance reliability and cut life-cycle expenses. The service authorized the engineering change proposal after the completion in May 1998 of all flight trials at the Pacific Missile Test Center, Pt Mugu, and environmental qualification testing of the IAU. Northrop Grumman intends to include the new electronics unit into the BQM-74Es which it is constructing with fiscal year 1998 procurement funds. Deliveries of these equipment are set to start in April 1998.
