Using natural light and air flow
Article Abstract:
Three architectural practices have been commissioned by the Energy Technology Support Unit to design office buildings with low energy use. The schemes are; a refurbishment, a design for a business park and one for a city location. All three use a combination of natural and mechanical ventilation, allowing air to be delivered to specific locations and controlled by the users. Temperature stability is achieved by insulation and bringing cool air into the buildings at night. Lighting is addressed in a number of ways with the aim to maximise natural light without creating excessive solar gain.

Environmental assessment standards for existing offices
Article Abstract:
The Building Research Establishment has issued a set of standards for the environmental assessment of existing buildings. BREEAM 4 can be used by designers working on refurbishments and purchasers of buildings. It is also intended for use by occupiers and covers both the building's fabric and services and its operation and maintenance. Certification is based on credits given for each aspect of the building. Changes from previous BREEAMs include measuring of C02 emissions and assessment of metering, access to public transport, staff information and sick building syndrome.

Learning by doing: environmental innovation in buildings increases the risk of failure. A recent series of case studies highlights what does and does not work
Article Abstract:
The recent Probe research into building services also offers useful environmental design advice for architects. The research covers eight buildings and found that the main working spaces were the main preoccupation of design, with energy often wasted in remaining spaces. Cooling plant was often oversized and systems were too complex. Designers need to consider new technology and the implementation of new ideas very carefully so that systems are kept simple and risk is minimized.
