WINTER FROST MAY CHILL NILGIRIS TEA OUTPUT
Article Abstract:
Tea plantations in Nilgiris district have been affected by severe frost as night temperature since December 20, 1998, had dropped to below 10 degrees Celsius and at times zero degree Celsius. Tea crop in 10 plantations of Nilgiris district has been hit and the crop loss is expected to be 800,000 kg. Tea production in Conoor, Kotagiri and Ooty has also been affected by frost. Nilgiris district produces 80 million kg per annum, which is 40 percent of the total production of southern India and 9 percent of total production of India. Tea is grown in 50,000 hectares in Nilgiris district. (rk/kvr)

PACKET TEA INDUSTRY SET TO ROLL BACK PRICES
Article Abstract:
The packet tea industry is expected to soon roll back the hike in tea prices. Hindustan Lever Ltd has brought down the prices, ranging from Rs7 to Rs14 per kg, of all its packed tea brands of over 100 gms. The company has stated that it has decided to pass on the full benefits of the withdrawal of the 8 percent excise duty on packet tea to consumers. Other companies like Tata Tea and Duncans are expected to announce price reductions soon. (khr)
