Killing Americans
Article Abstract:
Three US human rights workers have been killed in Colombia, and The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) has admitted that a FARC commander was responsible. The leadership has promised that the commander will be punished, and he could be executed. The FARC is seeking to negotiate with the government and gain allies abroad, so the killings have created problems for the guerillas. It was initially unclear whether the FARC or paramilitaries had been responsible, and the motive for the killings is still unclear.

Peace in Colombia? This year, next year, sometime...
Article Abstract:
The Colombian government aims to end guerilla warfare and President Andres Pastrana has met leaders from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in the hope of achieving a peace agreement. There has been slow progress and a number of obstacles. The killing of US activists by a FARC force has given ammunition to critics of the talks, and may be an indication of divisions within FARC. The Colombian economy looks set to shrink, and many FARC demands could not be met due to lack of funds.
