Waste water management statistics
Article Abstract:
Czech Republic: During 1990-1999, 267 larger sewage treatment plants were built in the country. Practically all agglomerations with more than 10,000 inhabitants have adequate sewage treatment plants. Yet the country is unable to meet all the European water management norms by 2003 when it is expected to join the EU. Therefore the country has applied for transitional periods in four problem fields, namely the treatment of city sewage, the protection of water against nitrates from agricultural sources, the quality of water intended for human consumption, and contamination caused by hazardous matters discharged to the water environment. The debt in water management is about CEK 100 bil, 70% of which are necessary for sewerage and sewage treatment plants. The Czech Republic will have to invest about CEK 10 bil per year in its water management infrastructure during the pre-admission and transitional period.
