Watch the water, too
Article Abstract:
There are an estimated 76 million cases involving food-related illnesses annually in the US, and 5,000 deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control. This is a higher figure than previous estimates, and calcualtions are difficult since misdiagnoses are common. Changes in the origin and preparation of food mean that the pathogens found in food also change. Listeria is a microbe which can thrive in refrigerated food, for example. The network of agencies that deal with this problem is in need of consolidation, and funds available are less than sought by the Clinton administration.
