Watches & clocks. Market sector: durables
Article Abstract:
The watches and clocks market in the UK saw slow growth in 1994 because of a fall in consumer expenditure together with retailer discounting. The best performing sector between 1990 and 1994 was watches, with quartz analogue watches accounting for most of the recent growth. Emerging product sectors include luminous watches, which are proving competitive. There is a resurgence of interest in the clock market, particularly in traditional analogue clocks, but the alarm clock sector has continued to fall.

Article Abstract:
Hong Kong investors are beginning to consider diversifying as the stock and property markets lose their value. Many have turned to mutual funds, but despite this only 3.4% of households have money in a mutual fund. Europe has become very attractive to investors looking to diversify out of Hong Kong. Indeed, Hong Kong people placed $42.8 million into European equities in Apr 1998. Some investors are moving into hedge funds, which allow them to hedge during periods of market volatility.
