Wealth but not work
Article Abstract:
German unemployment has dropped since 1997 when it peaked at 11.5%, but remains high at almost 11%. The budget for 1999 aims to boost spending and the solution is seen by Oskar Lafontaine as lying in an expansion of demand. Manufacturing jobs have moved abroad and this has been due to mergers as well as the high costs of employing labor in Germany. German tax policies may deter foreign investors, and regulations are also a deterrent. German wages also tend to be high.
