What now? Australia's Senate stalls liberalization plans
Article Abstract:
Australia's Senate has blocked several high-profile privatization efforts backed by the administration and the lower house. The Liberal-National coalition, more conservative than its Labor Party predecessor, wants to sell a third of national telecommunications carrier Telstra, as well as 22 airports, and deregulate the national labor market. The Senate may eventually approve the airport privatization, but other compromises would require one side or the other to abandon campaign promises.
