What's right for St Paul's
Article Abstract:
British architect Sir William Whitfield is fully aware of the many different expectations and pressures which will make his task of developing an effective master plan for Pasternoster Square in London challenging and even controversial. Mitsubishi has chosen Whitfield to reconcile the differing architectural, cultural and commercial requirements of the site. Whitfield believes that the site and its context are the most important factors, and he prefers simplicity to elaborate designs.

Layering new with the old: making the most of a mews: the conversion of an Edinburgh garage mews into a one-bedroom flat is a model of practical ingenuity
Article Abstract:
A mews conversion in Edinburgh's Royal Terrace Mews was designed by Richard Murphy, an architect. The mews was built in the 1840s as stables for horses and carriages, with hay lofts above. The disused property was turned into a one bedroom flat with the main living space on the first floor, which had to be lowered. A steel channel was installed on the front facade at the new floor level which acts as a runner for a sliding garage, and a glass block panel which slides behind.

Making sense of the city
Article Abstract:
The Institute of Contemporary Art's (ICA) first series of Spaced Out talks and discussions focused on architectural and urban issues against the background of new lottery projects. The second series, which is now beginning, will look at the nature of spaces and places which are currently not really being used. This series is part of moves by the ICA to develop new perspectives on contemporary architecture and urbanism.
