The NAFTA has beneficial effects for both the US and Mexico that extend beyond economic development and into political cooperation. Politically, the NAFTA has strenghtened ties between the US and Mexico in their fight against police drug trafficking and immigration problems. Economically, the NAFTA helped realize trade agreements between the two countries.

China hopes that efforts by the US and other nations will improve the chances it will be accepted into the World Trade Organization (WTO) by Jun 1997. China's booming economy lends credence to its membership in WTO, but the manner in which trade can be conducted is severely limited.

Global foreign exchange holdings are now at the highest level in 30 years, amounting to 26% of world exports. While this can be seen as a measure of strong financial performance, it does not do national economies any good not to reinvest excessive reserves.
