Where there's smoke, there's medicine
Article Abstract:
The debae on the legalization of marijuana for medical purposes has intensified as a result of laws in seven states, including Maine, permitting such usage. Marijuana is seen as effective in stimulating the appetite, pain relief, and control of nausea. Federal laws still criminalize usage of the plant, but there is a strengthening trend toward liberalization of marijuana laws. In New Mexico, there could even be a move to allow usage for non-medical purposes. A drug called Marinol is available and includes a psychoactive component from marijuana, but users can more easily regulate their intake by smoking the herb.

Let death be my dominion
Article Abstract:
The Dutch parliament is studying a proposal to legalize assisted suicide by family physicians. The denate on euthanasia is linked to attitudes to suicide. Islam and Christianity have forbidden suicide, though other religions like Hinduism and Buddhism do not condemn it as much. Suicide can devastate surivors, who may feel anger and guilt. Social obligations can be cited both as a reason against and for suicide, in the case of those dependent on others. Medicine sees suicide as irrational except for people who are terminally ill. Euthanasia also links the right to die to terminal illness.
