Hail to the chief tourist
Article Abstract:
The visit of President Bill Clinton to India in Mar 2000 will end a long gap since the last US presidential visit by Jimmy Carter in 1978. The US imposed sanctions on India and Pakistan after they carried out tests of nuclear weapons, and the presidential visit could appear to sanction their actions. A visit to Pakistan, where a coup has occurred, may also be carried out, and ignoring Pakistan could involve an apparent snub. The message appears to be that building nuclear weapons is a way of attracting the attention of the US.

The elephant and the pekinese
Article Abstract:
President Bill Clinton is to visit India, Bangladesh and Pakistan, with the main focus on India, which is rapidly developing its economy. India is developing a high-tech sector, and has nuclear weapons. Relations between India and the US have improved since the days of the cold war, when the US was closer to Pakistan. India has liberalised its economy, and software exports to the US have become important. India is also seen by strategists as a useful ally and counterweight to China.
