Wired in the woods
Article Abstract:
The Seattle metropolitan area faces severe traffic congestion and air pollution, crowded schools and rapidly rising house prices. Issaquah, Washington, a small town in the area, suffers from these problems, exacerbated by a trend toward large homes. The growth of high-tech industry, fueled by Microsoft, has led to an economic boom which in turn is linked to these environmental problems. There are steep hills that leave little space for updating the road system. High density housing would help to ease the problem, but further growth of high-tech companies could exacerbate urban sprawl in the region.

In London's shadow
Article Abstract:
Manchester, England, was at one time the most dynamic city in the world, but in recent years has become overshadowed by London, England. However, the city is now experiencing a revival driven by a new generation of entrepreneurs. It has particularly benefited from the flourishing of pop music and youth culture, and has a strong night-time economy. The future now looks more positive, but efforts still need to be made to address the depressed inner-city areas located between the flourishing downtown areas and the wealthy suburbs.

America's emerging markets
Article Abstract:
President Clinton has toured poor areas within the US, and aims to encourage private investment. There is a need for investment in housing, transportation and education, and for private investment. There are dangers that bureaucracy could hamper the success of Clinto's plan, as could too much money invested too rapidly. Funds could also be misdirected instead of created. There are political benefits from a stress on rapid aid, but the economic issues should not be forgotten.
