World-wide chip sales decline 13%
Article Abstract:
Global sales of semiconductor chips dropped almost 13% from the year-ago period to $9.99 billion, the lowest monthly sales recorded since February 1995, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association. The downturn, which affected almost all category of chip manufacturer and their equipment suppliers, was due to the economic woes in Asia, a saturation of production capacity and pricing tensions caused by low-cost personal computers. Among those affected by the downturn are companies in Silicon Valley in the US, which have laid off employees and issued warnings about financial results for the second quarter.

Promodes says sales on target
Article Abstract:
Promodes SA, a food retailer based in France, stated that it is hitting its goal of an 8-percent increase in sales in 1998, considering the current situation in its stores in the first five months of 1998. The company, which posted $28.78 billion in revenues in 1997, said that the result in the first five months is in line with the company forecast for the year and that the decline in sales in France has been more than balanced by foreign sales. Chief Operating Officer Luc Vandevelde, declined to provide earnings projection, but asserts that Promodes would be among the top three French retailers.
