Zambians find a way to run their copper industry from the comfort of Kent
Article Abstract:
ZES (Zambian Engineering Unit), owned by Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Ltd., is a small firm employing 300 people at Ashford in Kent (Great Britain) that is securing technology transfer for Zambia's copper industry, without Zambia losing control over its mines and their profits. The history of the firm is described and its future prospects discussed. ZES's success with international contracts is due to engineering expertise and the use of three-dimensional scale modeling, accurate to a millimeter, for long-distance supervision. ZES has also found greater success in maintaining an engineering staff by not requiring this staff to expatriate.
