"clean city" tilt spurs tobacco ad ban
Article Abstract:
Guangzhou's city government has announced to ban all outdoor tobacco advertisements from 25 August 1998. The Guangzhou Administration of Industry and Commerce, however, pleaded for two month extension as any advertising agency which break the rules, may not be allowed to handle cigarette advertising under the ban. The advertising agency watchdog also indicated that current regulations did not provide for this fully ban. China's advertising law in 1994 only prohited all cigarette advertising from newspapers, TV and public areas. This did not include billboards, public transport and cafe umbrellas. *

Moderately fast growth of 7% deemed desirable
Article Abstract:
China will unlikely to achieve 10% economic growth in the remaining three years as part of its Ninth Five Year plan between 199-2000. It needs to revise the target to 7%-8% as changes in economic climate. It still can achieve full year target of 8% growth in 1998 with increased infrastructure investment. The 8% growth can help reduce the number of laid-off state workers under reform. *
