Article Abstract:
The Information Technology and Broadcasting reported 55% of government computer systems did not have millennium bug problem. About 43% had the bug problem. Of these 51% would be solved by the end of 1998. 49% would be solved in first half of 1999. It also reported 90% of computer systems in banking sector and 70% in insurance would solve the bug by the end of 1998. Computer systems in gas and power companies would get rid of bug by the end of 1998 and mid-1999 respectively. A 100% telecommunications, satellite networks services and mobile radio phone services, and 90% fixed telecommunications networks would comply by the end of 1998. Aviation, Mass Transit Railway and Hospital Authority systems will comply by the third quarter of 1999. The Kowloon-Canton Railway is expected to clear up the bug in 1998. Hong Kong University is asking government for bug clearing funds. *

The world's largest video-conferencing solutions provider, PictureTel launched PictureTel 330 NetConference Multipoint Server software in Hong Kong. The new product is based on the international Internet protocol (IP) video-conferencing standard H.323. It allows up to 24 individual users, or teams, to meet in virtual conference rooms. Hang Seng puts credit card growth on hold

Hang Seng Bank said it would not aggressively develop its credit card business in the rest of 1998 due to the economic downturn. The bank anticipated the delinquency rate in the market to rise from over 6% for the first quarter of 1998 to 7-8% in the second half year. The bank said its delinquency rate was kept at a level below the market average. *
