ABI Leisure
Article Abstract:
ABI Leisure saw a drop in touring caravan sales of 17% for the six months to Feb 1995. The company is reducing prices and offering credit to increase sales. Touring caravan exports to Europe have performed well, especially in the Netherlands and France, and mobile home sales are also performing well in this market. Sales to the tour operator market have not performed as well, and prospects for touring caravans in the UK are not hopeful, but the company should perform well in other areas.

ABI Leisure: on the trail
Article Abstract:
ABI Leisure produces caravans and was faced with a drop in demand in the UK in the 1990s whichled the company to develop export markets. Exports rose to 40 million pounds sterling in 1996 from 13 million pounds in 1991. The company is entering the German market and has already performed well in France and the Netherlands. The high value of pound sterling does not appear to be a problem since components can be imported and the company uses forward foreign exchange contracts.

Vans in shock reverse
Article Abstract:
ABI Leisure has warned of a loss for the 12 months to Aug 1997. The company announced the loss a fortnight after estimating a profit of 4.5 million pounds sterling. Chief executive of ABI, David Carrick, has resigned. The company has been hit by the high value of pound sterling, and is vulnerable because exports account for almost 50% of turnover. Hedging for exposure to foreign exchange was not adequate and large foreign currency balances were retained.
