AUDITMAN Proves a Big Favourite with Practices
Article Abstract:
AUDITMAN is a popular final accounts program supplied by Computer Services Midland, Ltd. It has three main sections: 1) processing client data, 2) design and testing client reports and 3) utilities for systems control. The cost of the system is approximately 7,500 pounds. The huge manual is poorly written, but the system itself is comprehensive and well-designed. There are eleven types of transactions for data entry with each client being allowed a maximum of 3500 transactions per period. Some transactions are automated. Extra information can be accessed while in the transaction mode. Report specifications are complex, but no more so than others in comparable categories. Both housekeeping utilities and controller/accountant utilities are available. The latter allows for considerable ability to manipulate the data. AUDITMAN can also use transaction data files from programs. A comprehensive diagram of the organizational set-up of the program is included. Cost of the system is charted out.

A Record-Keeping System for the Competent User
Article Abstract:
A program supplied by G.W. Computers, Ltd., DBMS3 is a database management system with flexible record- keeping capabilities. The cost is 295 pounds without and 575 with a training course. The demonstration database that comes with the system includes an accounting ledger system. VOCAB is a predefined file that controls the program and contains all the parameters of the database and its files. Control of data entry is rudimentary, searching sequentially. The manual is not clearly written. Aimed at the low-cost end of the market, DBMS3 still requires a competent user to be fully effective. DBMS uses a print mask with a coding system for printing which provides flexibility but is difficult to use.
