Bring on British Energy
Article Abstract:
British Energy is being privatized by the UK government which is selling the whole of its stake in the company. The public offer starts on Jun 26 1996 and investors should register at share shops which the government has appointed. Registered investors are given preference in the event of oversubscription. They are also offered bonuses such as free shares through share shops. Investors seeking to sell at a higher price shortly after they have bought the shares should check what restrictions may be imposed by the share shop.

Nuclear Electric: safety risk clouds float
Article Abstract:
The UK government plans to privatize Nuclear Electric but safety issues may deter investors. This problem was emphasized following the imposition of a fine and legal costs over an incident at the Wylfa Magnox power station in Wales. A delay in shutting down the power station was linked to penalties from the National Grid for shutting down. Decommissioning costs also raise uncertainties as does competition from other sources of energy. A flotation is planned for summer 1996 and the new company will be named British Energy.

Nuclear power? Well, maybe
Article Abstract:
The UK nuclear power industry will undergo privatization, and the government is seeking to transfer risks to the private sector. High costs are associated with decommissioning plants. The public sector will retain the oldest power stations, but cleaning up advanced gas reactors will be carried out by the private sector. The government does not plan to subsidise the building of new nuclear power stations. Prospects for privatizing the industry are better in 1995 than in 1989, despite these problems.
