Building materials: still tough
Article Abstract:
The UK construction materials industry faces tough conditions with a slowdown in new building and output forecast to rise more slowing than economic growth generally. Profits will improve if the UK is undergoing a temporary slowdown rather than a longer term downturn. Cost cutting has helped profits in 1995. This means that margins are likely to improve when economic recovery revives. The share prices of companies in the sector reflect uncertainty especially with regard to companies depending on the UK market.

Baris: recovery punt
Article Abstract:
Baris Holdings has seen a drop in its share price and results for the year to Feb 1995 are likely to be poor. The company is likely to increase its profit and could achieve 600,000 pounds sterling for the 12 months to Feb 1996, which makes Baris shares attractive. The company produces fire protection equipment which it installs, and operates in the UK. Baris does not undertake small contracts. Administrative costs have been reduced and the company should benefit from the tax effect of its past losses.

Sales have dropped by 20% between 1990 and 1995, and sales dropped by 6.7% in 2nd qtr 1995 compared with 2nd qtr 1994. The number of smaller merchants is declining and some larger companies could be taken over.
